CT Scan

What is a CT Scan?

A CT scan (Computed Tomography scan) is a medical imaging technique that uses X-rays and computer processing to create detailed images of the inside of the body. It can show bones, organs, blood vessels, and soft tissues more clearly than regular X-rays.

CT scans are often used to:

  • Diagnose muscle and bone disorders
  • Detect internal injuries or bleeding
  • Locate tumors, infections, or blood clots
  • Guide surgical procedures or biopsies
  • Monitor diseases like cancer or heart conditions

How Does a CT Scan Work?

A CT scanner looks like a large, donut-shaped machine. Here’s how the process works:

  1. X-Ray Rotation: The patient lies on a motorized table that moves slowly through the circular opening. An X-ray tube rotates around the body.
  2. Image Capture: As it spins, the scanner takes multiple X-ray images from different angles.
  3. Computer Processing: A powerful computer processes these images and assembles them into cross-sectional views (slices) of the body. These can be stacked to form 3D images.

The scan is painless and typically takes just a few minutes.

CT scans are a vital diagnostic tool that provides detailed internal images quickly and accurately. While they involve some exposure to radiation, the medical benefits usually outweigh the risks—especially when diagnosing or monitoring serious conditions.

Always discuss any concerns with your doctor to ensure a CT scan is the right choice for your health needs.

Fluoroscopy

Sometimes doctors need to see more than a still image to diagnose or treat a problem. Fluoroscopy is a test that uses a steady beam of x-rays (like a movie) to look at parts of the body and movement within the body, such as blood moving through a blood vessel....

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

It’s clear—precision is important during diagnosis. Of all imaging technologies, MRI or Magnetic Resonance Imaging gives doctors the clearest, most precise image of the inside of the body. It’s sophisticated, and uses a strong magnetic field to show the structure and...

Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear Medicine

A special kind of imaging, nuclear medicine creates images of the body and its functions by capturing the energy of a safe radioactive substance as it flows through the body. It’s used to detect tumors and infection by bringing to light a number of bodily processes...

Ultrasound

Ultrasound

Mountain West Medical Center uses ultrasound as a painless, non-invasive way to diagnose a variety of diseases and conditions without the use of radiation, making this a widely used procedure during pregnancy. Sometimes called sonography, ultrasounds bounce...
